Road to nowhere bryson city nc map1/16/2024 ![]() ![]() ![]() The road was started in the 1930s when the land for the national park was acquired, but it was never finished. The Road to Nowhere is technically Lakeview Drive, a road that runs out of Bryson City, North Carolina toward the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. There was a Talking Heads song in the mid-80's called "Road to Nowhere." If you like that song here's your opportunity to listen to it as you take a ride on a REAL Road to Nowhere. I don't really know how long you'd have to hike to get to the cars on the trail. Google Fontana Dam underwater ghost town, and Judson Ghost Town. I saw pictures of the old cars from back when they made the dam. So maybe next summer we will swing by it and walk through. LOL Now reading more about it, I think it was a horse. No one else was there so we chickened out. We saw a huge mound of poop and just figured it was a bear. There was a bear alert in every park we went to because it is June and July. I could already see the F bombs on the walls. We decided not to walk through it being we had kids. The tunnel is neat but too bad they can't up keep it more. After approaching the tunnel, there is a parking lot. I know it had to be done but it is just creepy, sad and so intriguing. The towns that were flooded over to build the dam. Just think of all the history underneath that water. The boat takes them to the old cemetery sites only once a year. Most of the people that were promised the road are no longer living. Scenic and worth taking the extra hour to do.Īfter taking the trip to the Fontana Dam. I feel like just about anyone that can walk a couple of miles can do it. Take the time to do the trail coming out of the tunnel (tunnel bypass trail) it brings you back to the parking lot. We had to park along the side of the road as there is very few parking spots and it has a lot of visitors. Some people are driving really fast and come in hot at the end of the road which seems a little dangerous. I was nervous a little as my husband was the driver and it I did not want him to take his eyes off the road as they twist and turn around the mountain. There are a few scenic pull over stops that are breathtaking. We pulled over along the way about 7-8 miles on way to the tunnel. The road was very well maintained and the scenery was unbelievable. The road to Nowhere takes you to the tunnel to nowhere which takes you to a very nice hiking trail. Did this one afternoon and I am so glad we did. Staying in Bryson City for a few day at Deep Creek Campground. ![]()
